Neuronal representation of optic ̄ow experienced by unilaterally blinded ̄ies on their mean walking trajectories

چکیده
Asymmetries in the optic ̄ow on both eyes may indicate an unintended turn of an animal and evoke compensatory optomotor responses. On a straight path in an evenly structured environment, the optic ̄ow on both eyes is balanced corresponding to a state of optomotor equilibrium. When one eye is occluded an optomotor equilibrium is expected to be reached on a curved path provided that the translatory optic ̄ow component is cancelled by a superimposed rotation. This hypothesis is tested by analysing how the HSE cell, a constituent element of the ̄y's optomotor system, represents optic ̄ow in behavioural situations. The optic ̄ow as seen on the average trajectory of freely walking monocular ̄ies is reconstructed. This optic ̄ow is used as stimulus of the HSE cell in electrophysiological experiments and as input of a model of the ̄y's optomotor system. The responses of the HSE cell and of the model ̄uctuate around the resting potential. On average, they are much smaller than the responses evoked by optic ̄ow experienced on a straight path. These results corroborate the hypothesis that the mean trajectory of monocular ̄ies corresponds to a path of optomotor

Neuronal processing of behaviourally generated optic flow: experiments and model simulations.
The stimuli traditionally used for analysing visual information processing are much simpler than what an animal sees when moving in its natural environment. Therefore, we analysed in a previous study the performance of an identified neuron in the optomotor system of the fly by using as visual stimuli image sequences that were experienced by the animal while walking in a structured environment. ...
متن کاملStrike feeding behavior in the muskellunge, Esox masquinongy: contributions of the lateral line and visual sensory systems.
The muskellunge, Esox masquinongy, is a predatory esocid fish with well-developed visual and lateral line systems. The purpose of this study was to determine the relative roles of these two sensory modalities in organizing the strike behavior of the animal. Subadult muskellunge were videotaped in a test arena while feeding on fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). Animals were tested under five...

Using their whiskers, rats have tactile capacities rivaling those of the human with our fingertips. We have carried out experiments to explore how neurons encode touch signals to build up a central representation. Touch signals begin with the receptors in the follicle of each whisker and can be traced to a columnar module in somatosensory cortex that is connected with the same whisker: the well...

Radial patterns of optic ̄ow contain a centre of expansion that indicates the observer's direction of self-movement. When the radial pattern is viewed with transparently overlapping unidirectional motion, the centre of expansion appears to shift in the direction of the unidirectional motion [Duffy, C.J. & Wurtz, R.H. (1993) Vision Res., 33, 1481±1490]. Neurons in the medial superior temporal (M...
